Award Winner

Gaza
by Joe Sacco

Translation: Christoph Schuler
Edition Moderne

Laudatio:
Joe Sacco didn’t invent comics reportage, but he gave new life to this genre when he traveled to Palestine as a comics journalist for the first time twenty years ago. With “Gaza” (“Footnotes in Gaza”), his newest report after “Palestine” and “Bosnien” (“Safe Area Goražde”), Sacco, who was born in 1960, again impressively and emphatically demonstrates the documentary and journalistic potential of comics. In “Gaza”, Sacco examines a footnote in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian territories, two massacres of Palestinian civilians during the Suez Crisis in 1965. 400 men were killed in Chan Younis and Rafah. Sacco’s interest was awakened when he couldn’t find any literature on the topic. He traveled to the Gaza Strip and interviewed numerous eyewitnesses. Sacco confronts his journey into the past with his observations on the current situation in present-day Gaza. More than once, he witnesses the arbitrariness of the Israeli occupiers who flatten houses and silence activists. Thanks to the juxtaposition of past events with the current bleak and hopeless everyday life, “Gaza” becomes a polyphonic and multilayered report that ultimately also examines the mechanisms of the endless conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
Joe Sacco’s importance for the boom in documentary and journalistic comics cannot be overestimated – and “Gaza” impressively confirms his qualities as a dedicated journalist, a conscientious researcher, a great storyteller and a realistic artist.
