The story of an angel in postwar Germany in the year 1946. That is „Annas Paradies“ („Annas Paradise“) by Daniel Schreiber, nominated for the „Max und Moritz“-Prize 2012. Fantasy meets neo-realism. A young German comics artist with an education as an architectural draftsman, a university lectureship and experience in animation manages to find new facets in an established genre. The colors are somber (Schreiber calls them “dirty”). Death is real. Daniel Schreiber works with classic techniques. He wants to hear pencil scratching on paper. Later he colors the preliminary drawings with watercolors. Neither his page layout nor his character designs are searching for the avant-garde. The drawings serve the story and accentuate the atmosphere. Schreiber’s work is comics craft of the highest level, the straightforward execution of ideas that are a little different.
