Award Winner
Ampel Magazin
by Anja Wicki, Luca Bartulovic and Andreas Kiener
Hochschule Luzern – Design & Kunst
Laudatio: The „Max und Moritz“-Prize for the best student publication was first awarded in 2008, but it is already beyond dispute and a matter close to the jury’s heart. Actually, the importance of universities and academies for young comics artists in the German-speaking countries shouldn’t be overestimated. This year, the jury picked the “Ampel Magazin” out of the abundance of interesting student publications, edited by Anja Wicki, Luca Bartulovic and Andreas Kiener, students at the Hochschule Luzern – Design & Kunst in Lucerne/Switzerland. In “Ampel Magazin 8” (together with the former fourth editor Alice Kolb), 15 artists go on a fanciful journey through Switzerland, whereby the individual episodes merge into one long story. Apart from the ambitious conceptual approach, the obvious artistic qualities and the thoughtful design, additional aspects convinced the jury: the “Ampel Magazin” is created as a student initiative independent from their studies and without (financial) assistance from the Hochschule Luzern. Luca Bartulovic, Andreas Kiener and Anja Wicki launched their magazine in January 2010 because they wanted the freedom to publish their own work and the work of artist friends and in order to learn the craft of making a magazine. In only a year and a half, a total of eight (!) magazines has been published. Each issue is different from the others in concept and format. “Ampel Magazin 9” has just been released, in the middle of finals stress! So much idealism, dedication and unpaid night work and such great tenacity promise great things for the future – you can probably bet on the “Ampel Magazin” being around for a while.
