Schöne Töchter by Flix
Der Tagesspiegel
Laudatio: “Schöne Töchter“ (“Beautiful Daughters”) is a declaration of love: to women in general and the comic strip in particular. The first point will only be touched on very briefly, since it isn’t necessary to say much about the merits of love. Flix tells us about togetherness and the loneliness into which it plunges some people. Because “Schöne Töchter” doesn’t simply sing love’s praises. On the contrary: Moments of crisis between men and women are more often a topic of the episodes that appear in the “Tagesspiegel” in Berlin every four weeks. But behind all of the crises lies fascination, and it is clear in every moment that it is the impetus behind the bitterest ridicule and the most telling punch line.
So love is the topic and a comic is the form. The latter sounds like a platitude, but what makes “Schöne Töchter” special is that Flix demonstrates what a comic strip can be, beginning with the format, a square, a very unusual layout that is perfect for the Berlin artist’s page-architectural marvels. How he partitions the area, colors it, stages it – is a formal homage to Herriman’s “Krazy Kat” and Watterson’s “Calvin and Hobbes”. And in terms of content to Schulz’s “Peanuts”. Hence a story that encompasses the entire history of comic strips comes full circle. And with “Schöne Töchter”, Flix has found something similar to the squaring of the circle.
